Metric Day

It's Metric Day. Please take a few minutes today to mail your senators and congress folk requesting they use metric exclusively when writing laws.

The best form for this is a story telling them of some way you've been ripped off or severely inconvenienced by customary measurements or our mixed use of systems.

Sally Mitchell gave a talk today about moving to metric as part of her 2009 James Bryant Conant Award speech. As she says, instead of losing time teaching multiple systems, we should be teaching our kids one easy to use system of measurement. There's not enough time in schools to teach them everything they need to know so getting rid of a difficult to use measurement system in favor of the universal measurement system would help everyone (particularly the kids when they go to get a job at, say Genentech which, even as a US founded company, requires all employees to use metric).
